iOS Devices Hit Harder By Phishing Attacks Than Android: Lookout Report

A new report from Lookout, a cloud security firm, has raised alarming concerns about the increasing number of phishing attacks targeting iOS devices. According to the Q3 2024 Mobile Threat Landscape Report, 18.4% of iOS devices experienced phishing attempts, surpassing the 11.4% rate seen in Android devices. This data comes from a thorough analysis of over 220 million devices, 360 million apps, and billions of web items.

Why iOS Devices Are More Vulnerable

The findings suggest that the popularity of iOS devices in workplace environments is a key factor driving this trend. Lookout’s research reveals that iOS devices significantly outnumber Android devices in enterprise settings, providing a broader pool of potential targets for cybercriminals. In 2024, nearly 19% of iOS devices in enterprise environments encountered at least one phishing attack each quarter, compared to only 10.9% for Android devices. While this discrepancy may seem to indicate a weakness in Apple’s software, it is more closely related to the larger volume of iOS devices in use.

The Growing Threat of Phishing Attacks

The report also highlights a surge in phishing attempts across the board, with a 17% increase in enterprise-focused credential theft since the previous quarter. Malicious app detections rose by 32%, underscoring the growing importance of mobile devices as targets for cybercriminals. As phishing attacks become more sophisticated, they leverage AI tools to craft highly convincing fake messages and websites. These attacks are designed to deceive users into sharing personal information, such as usernames and passwords.

Sophistication of Phishing Tactics

As phishing tactics become more refined, cybercriminals are using advanced technologies to create phishing campaigns that are increasingly difficult for users to recognise as fraudulent. These attacks not only threaten enterprise networks but also pose significant risks to everyday smartphone users. Experts predict that the evolution of phishing tactics will continue to accelerate in 2025, making mobile devices an even more lucrative target for attackers.

How to Stay Safe from Phishing Scams

Whether you use an iPhone or Android device, it’s important to stay vigilant. Phishing attacks often rely on users making hasty decisions when presented with urgent or suspicious messages. To protect yourself:

  • Avoid clicking on links from unknown or unusual sources.
  • Double-check URLs to ensure they are legitimate before entering sensitive information.
  • Never share personal information unless you are sure that the website or communication is secure.

As phishing attempts become more sophisticated, awareness and caution are your best defenses against falling victim to these scams.
