In a significant move, the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell on Wednesday summoned an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in Assam in connection with the Rs. 105 crore-State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) scandal.

Bidyut Kalita, a Mirza resident who is allegedly connected to the SCERT scandal, has been named as the AAP leader. It has emerged that Kalita had been avoiding attention out of concern for being detained in connection with the scheme. However, the AAP leader was captured and taken to the office today by the special vigilance cell.

It should be noted that on Tuesday, the Chief Ministers’ Special Vigilance Cell detained four people in connection with the major Rs 105 crore State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) scandal, including two journalists and two Right To Information Act (RTI) staffers.

Two journalists and two Right To Information Act (RTI) personnel were among those detained by the CM Vigilance Cell; their names had come up during the questioning of the case’s top suspect, Sewali Devi Sharma.

The people detained were identified as RTI officials Anup Saikia and Rabijit Gogoi, as well as journalists Bhaskarjyoti Hazarika and Pujamoni Das.

According to information collected, each of them was kept that night at the Pan Bazar Police Station and the All Women Police Station in Pan Bazar after being brought for a medical examination in accordance with the proper protocol.

Many others run the risk of being apprehended, according to the superintendent of police (SP) of the CM Vigilance Cell, who was speaking about the situation.

The official said, “There is the possibility of many more to be trapped in the case. Funds had been deposited from the SCERT account to their personnel account. Investigations in this regard are underway. The list of names associated with the scam is sure to get elongated.”

It should be mentioned that the CM Vigilance Cell had questioned numerous journalists and RTI workers on the grounds of blackmailing Sewali Devi Sharma after the claims made by the main suspect in the SCERT scandal, Sewali Devi Sharma.

The CM Vigilance Cell was questioning a journalist named Pujamoni Das as part of their ongoing inquiry when they discovered that several lakhs of rupees had been put in her mother’s bank account, according to sources.

The unit was also interrogating Maina Saikia, also known as Anup Saikia, a close friend of Rabijit Gogoi. An RTI employee named Gogoi was previously called into the vigilance cell office, where evidence of his demands for Sewali’s money were found on his mobile phone. Then, the cell took two mobile phones and a news agency identity card from his hands.

Previously, during questioning, Sewali Devi Sharma claimed that multiple RTI employees and media had blackmailed her. Sharma said that the RTI staff members and media she mentioned had extorted more than Rs 2 crore from her through blackmail and other means.

On May 20, Sewali Devi Sharma and nine other people were remanded to judicial detention in relation to the SCERT scandal.
