The Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday appointed the Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer, Sanjay Arora as the Commissioner of Delhi Police effective from Monday (1 August).

Arora, a 1998 batch IPS officer was heading the ITBP before being given the responsibility of the commissioner of Delhi Police. Arora will succeed the Gujarat Cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana to the top post of the Delhi Police.

The Ministry of Home Affairs’ notification issued on Sunday afternoon announcing the appointment of Arora has put to rest much of the speculation about Asthana being given an extension to continue as the Commissioner of Delhi Police. Asthan was appointed as the Commissioner on 30 July last year, just days ahead of his super annutatiion with an extension term of one year.

The Ministry of Home Affairs’ notification announcing the appointment said, “Police Division, MHA has conveyed the approval of the competent authority for inter cadre deputation of Sh. Sanjay Arora from Tamil Nadu cadre to AGMUT cadre. In pursuance of the said approval Sh. Sanjay Arora is hereby appointed as the Commissioner of Delhi Police effective from 1 August 2022 till further orders”.

Another senior Delhi Police and Special CP, Sanjay Beniwal was also one of the top contenders for the post.
