Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a press briefing ahead of the 16th BRICS Summit, echoed remarks made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, clarifying that BRICS is not an anti-Western alliance. “BRICS was never meant to be against anyone. As Prime Minister Modi said, BRICS is not an anti-Western group, it is a non-Western group,” Putin stated. It remains unclear if Putin was referring to direct discussions with PM Modi or comments by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who has previously stressed India’s non-Western, but not anti-Western, stance.
Economic Growth of BRICS Nations
Putin also addressed the economic trajectory of BRICS nations, particularly highlighting the growth prospects in China, India, and Saudi Arabia. “With respect to BRICS member nations, the growth of their economies will increase their clout. There has been continuous growth in trade among BRICS nations,” Putin said, underscoring the expanding economic influence of the bloc.
Ukraine Conflict and Modi’s Concerns
Touching on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Putin acknowledged the concerns raised by Prime Minister Modi in their previous talks. “Each time he raises this matter and expresses his considerations. We are thankful to him for that,” Putin remarked. However, he reiterated that the path to peace remains uncertain, adding, “It was not us who stopped the negotiations, but it was the Ukrainian side.”
Putin further elaborated on Russia’s strategic partnership with China, describing it as a “unique relationship” and a key factor in global stability. Meanwhile, relations with the US have soured, according to Putin, due to continuous sanctions imposed by Washington. He noted, “The US has spoilt its relationship with Russia… Even traditional US allies have reduced their Dollar reserves.”
Indian Films a Hit in Russia
In a lighter note, Putin mentioned the enduring popularity of Indian films in Russia. When asked about incentives for BRICS members to shoot films in Russia, he responded, “Indian films are the most popular in our country. We have a special TV channel showing Indian movies around the clock.”
The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place from October 22-23 in Kazan, Russia. Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend, and the summit will focus on the theme, “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.”
