Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the expansion and renovation work of the Parallel Delhi Canal on Thursday. He said that an amount of Rs 304 crore will be spent by the state government on the expansion and renovation work of the Parallel Delhi Canal. Due to this thousands of farmers of Israna, Panipat Rural and Samalkha assembly constituencies will also be greatly benefited alongwith the people of South Haryana.
This work will be started from Munak in Karnal to Khubdu head in Sonipat district. After the completion of the expansion work, the capacity of water in this canal will increase from 5528 cusecs to 7280 cusecs. The renovation will increase the width from 85 feet to 98 feet and the depth from 11.5 feet to 13.5 feet. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said, in a bid to ensure that farmers should get maximum benefit from the canal water, expansion and renovation work of Parallel Delhi Canal was necessary. He said that the people of South Haryana including Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat had been demanding for a long time that the capacity of water in the Parallel Delhi Canal should be increased.”In Haryana about 80 lakh acres of land is cultivable. Apart from canals, in the state, irrigation is also done through tube wells. With proper management of water, now the same can be supplied to the low-lying areas as well,” said Sh. Manohar Lal. He said that this scheme will prove effective for ensuring proper supply of drinking water to the area from Hathni Kund to Gurugram. On this occasion, MLA, Panipat City Pramod Vij, MLA Panipat Rural, Mahipal Dhanda and senior officers remained present.
