The Bengaluru police detained two men on Thursday in an autorickshaw close to the city market with Rs 1 crore in unaccounted cash ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections.
Suspecting that it might be hawala money, the SJ Park police have intimated the Income Tax department for further investigation on the cash seizure in the wake of the May 10 assembly elections in Karnataka where the Model Code of Conduct is in place.
According to the police, the sleuths stopped the vehicle seen in suspicious circumstances on Kalingarao road around 4.30 pm. Upon search, they discovered Rs 1 crore cash in a bag and two passengers named Suresh and Praveen in the autorickshaw did not have any documents in support of the cash, the police said.
Praveen works as an accountant in a firm at Vijayanagar while Suresh works as a helper. The duo told the police that the money belonged to the owner of the firm where they worked and that they were assigned to hand it over to a person in Jayanagar.
