RR vs RCB, IPL 2024: RCB Cancels Practice Before Eliminator Match Over Security Concerns For Virat Kohli

Ahead of the IPL 2024 Eliminator match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), RCB cancelled their practice session amidst security concerns related to Virat Kohli. Four individuals were arrested on suspicion of terror activities, prompting heightened security measures and leading to the cancellation of RCB’s practice session.

Originally scheduled to take place at the Gujarat College ground in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, RCB opted to forego their only practice session before the IPL 2024 Eliminator match against the Rajasthan Royals. While the Rajasthan Royals continued with their regular nets session at the same venue, the absence of a pre-match press conference raised eyebrows, indicating the seriousness of the security situation.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, where the match was scheduled to be held, was unavailable due to the IPL Qualifier 1 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. As an alternative, the Gujarat College ground was provided to both RCB and RR. However, RCB’s decision to cancel their practice session was reportedly influenced by information shared by Gujarat Police officials regarding a potential security threat to Virat Kohli.

Upon learning of the arrests, RCB promptly informed security personnel that they would not hold a practice session, prioritizing the safety of their players, particularly Kohli. Although RCB did not provide an official reason for their decision, the cancellation underscored the seriousness of the situation.

Security measures were visibly heightened outside RCB’s team hotel, with separate entry points designated for team members and restricted access for IPL-accredited media personnel. Meanwhile, RR arrived at the ground under heavy security escort, opting for a “green corridor” route.

Despite the security concerns, both teams remained focused on the upcoming match. RR, having missed a top-two finish after a series of defeats, were eager to make a strong comeback. RCB, on the other hand, showcased remarkable resilience to secure a playoff spot, winning six consecutive matches.

The cancellation of the practice session and the tightened security arrangements served as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by IPL teams amidst heightened security threats, emphasizing the need for vigilance and precautionary measures during high-profile sporting events.
