The Congress is attempting to exert “undue pressure” on the judiciary, according to Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, who questioned the plan by members of the opposition party to accompany Rahul Gandhi to a Surat court on Monday.
Gandhi will be in Surat, Gujarat, on Monday to file an appeal against his conviction in a criminal defamation case stemming from his “Modi surname” remarks.According to sources, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the chief ministers of three Congress-ruled states, and other national and state party leaders will accompany him to court.
The matter is expected to be heard by the sessions court on Monday, according to Gandhi’s lawyers.
“My point is straightforward: why is the Congress party attempting to exert undue pressure on the judiciary? There are methods and means for dealing with legal issues. But is this the right path?” He remarked.
He wondered if there had ever been a case where an entire party attempted to ‘gherao’ a court.
“The ED takes action; they want to close the ED office in Gherao. They want to gherao the CBI when it takes action. When the court renders its decision, they intend to seize control of the court complexes. These kinds of activities are detrimental to democracy, and every Indian must condemn them” He revealed to the reporters in Parliament House complex.
He referred to the decision of Congress leaders to accompany Gandhi to court as “sycophancy of one family,” and questioned whether the family was above the country.
