Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed that the restoration of Sabarmati Ashram reflects the government’s dedication to preserving and celebrating India’s rich history. In a post, PM Modi mentioned,
“Restoration of Sabarmati Ashram manifests our commitment to preserving and celebrating our rich history. The scale of the effort will leave you spellbound!”
PM Modi inaugurated the redeveloped Kochrab Ashram and launched the Master plan of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial at Mahatma Gandhi Ashram at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
PM Modi has consistently strived to uphold and promote the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, aiming to make them more accessible and relevant to contemporary society. The Kochrab Ashram, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1915, was his first Ashram in India and is now maintained as a memorial and tourist site by Gujarat Vidyapeeth.
The Gandhi Ashram Memorial Project, part of this ongoing effort, aims to revitalize Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings and philosophy for present and future generations. The project includes expanding the Ashram’s area from five acres to 55 acres and restoring 36 existing buildings, including ‘Hriday Kunj,’ Gandhi’s residence.
Additionally, the project will create new facilities for scholars to use the Ashram’s library and archives, along with an orientation center, interactive workshops, and public utilities. These facilities will showcase aspects of Gandhiji’s life and the Ashram’s legacy, preserving and disseminating his ideas for posterity.
