Sharda Sinha, the celebrated folk singer affectionately known as the ‘Bihar Kokila’ (Nightingale of Bihar), passed away today at the age of 72. She was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

Sinha had been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2017. Her health deteriorated following the recent demise of her husband, Braj Kishore Sinha, who succumbed to a brain hemorrhage on September 22, 2024. The loss profoundly affected her, leading to complications that necessitated her admission to AIIMS.

Born on October 1, 1952, in Hulas, Supaul district of Bihar, Sharda Sinha’s musical journey began with Maithili folk songs. Over the years, she expanded her repertoire to include Bhojpuri and Magahi songs, earning widespread acclaim. Her soulful renditions of traditional songs, especially during festivals like Chhath Puja, became an integral part of Bihar’s cultural fabric.

In recognition of her contributions to Indian music, Sinha was honored with the Padma Shri in 1991 and the Padma Bhushan in 2018. Her voice graced Bollywood films as well, with notable songs like “Kahe Toh Se Sajna” from Maine Pyar Kiya and “Babul” from Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

Despite her illness, Sinha remained active in the music scene, releasing new Chhath songs in 2016 after a decade-long hiatus. Her dedication to preserving and promoting folk music was evident throughout her career.

Her passing has left a void in the world of Indian folk music. Fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to express their condolences and share memories of her performances. The Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, expressed his grief, stating, “Sharda Sinha’s demise is an irreparable loss to the music world. Her songs will continue to resonate in the hearts of millions.”

Sinha is survived by her two children. Funeral arrangements are underway, with plans to honor her legacy in her hometown in Bihar.
