Following the deluge caused by extremely heavy rains in Nagpur, relief efforts are in full swing as officials work diligently to address the extensive flooding that inundated at least 10,000 homes.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed, “The city received 109 millimeters of rain in three hours, including 90 mm between 2 am and 4 am on Saturday.” The overflow from the Ambazari Lake, Nagpur’s largest waterbody, and the Nag river surging beyond their boundaries led to widespread flooding.
Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari outlined the response, explaining that as floodwaters recede, the civic administration has initiated the vital task of clearing silt from homes and affected areas. Recognizing the dire situation, the NMC has distributed 11,000 food packets to households whose kitchens are non-functional due to the flooding.
Chaudhari also emphasized the need for preventive measures, stating, “Fogging and spraying activities will begin soon to combat water and mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue. Chlorine liquid will be distributed for water cleanliness.” In addition to silt removal, the administration will address the disposal of electronic and other household items rendered useless by the floodwaters. To facilitate assistance and compensation, the civic chief mentioned, “The panchnama (spot assessment) of loss caused by the flooding begun on Sunday in coordination with the district collectorate. Accordingly, compensation and other benefits will be transferred to affected persons.” Efforts are underway to clear debris and unclog major drains or ‘nullahs’ with machinery deployed from various areas. While power outages affected several parts of the city, most areas have had their supply restored, Chaudhari assured.
