A unique participatory art project initiated by artist Texas based artist Mark Menjivar ‘A Monument for the People’ invites youth to reimagine what monuments are and who they stand for in the community. This unique project began in 2020 in San Antonio, Texas in the deep midst of the pandemic through online and later face to face workshops as the restrictions ceased. Participants explored the history of monuments and talked about what monuments are and who they are for. They were then invited to create a new monument for someone or something meaningful in their life. While the work is found on artist’s the website as text pieces, the physical installation has been created by interlocking laser etched acrylic squares to form freestanding structures. The project was created in collaboration with over 450 students Cast School Network and supported by the San Antonio Area Foundation and Blue Meridian Partners
