Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply responded to Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments in the Rajya Sabha targetting Jawaharlal Nehru on the Kashmir issue, asserting that Shah lacks historical knowledge and continually revises history. Rahul Gandhi defended Nehru’s contributions, stating, “Pandit Nehru dedicated his life to this country. He was in jail for years; Amit Shah ji does not know history.”
Gandhi accused the BJP of using diversionary tactics, emphasising that the primary issue at hand is the caste census and financial allocations. He asserted that the BJP avoids discussing and addressing these concerns.
Regarding Shah’s remarks in the Rajya Sabha, where he blamed Nehru for accepting the UN-brokered ceasefire in 1948, Gandhi dismissed it as a distraction. He praised the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the abrogation of Article 370. During his Rajya Sabha speech, Shah had claimed that even Nehru acknowledged his mistake in dealing with Jammu and Kashmir. Shah quoted Nehru’s words from documents at the Prime Minister’s Museum and Society at Teen Murti, where Nehru admitted there was no hope of a satisfactory outcome at the UN, expressing regret for the timing of the ceasefire. In a previous address to the Lok Sabha on December 6, Shah accused Nehru of making two blunders, leading to the suffering of Kashmir residents.
He also blamed the former PM for losing Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to the neighbouring nation. “Had Jawaharlal Nehru taken right steps, PoK would have been part of India now. It was a historic blunder,” he said.
