Taking a break from bypoll campaigning, Rahul Gandhi recently visited Wayanad to explore the region’s scenic beauty and encourage tourism following devastating landslides. In a video he posted on Tuesday, the Congress leader and Lok Sabha opposition leader can be seen trying Kerala’s longest zipline, wearing a “I love Wayanad” T-shirt. Jokingly, he invited his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, to try the zipline in her saree.
Rahul engaged with locals and adventure sports organizers, discussing the impact of the landslides, which hit the region hard in July. Speaking with shopkeepers and homestay owners, he expressed admiration for their resilience, acknowledging how the disaster has challenged their livelihoods. Despite the setbacks, he highlighted Wayanad’s potential, noting its “incredible attractions,” including South India’s largest giant swing and a thrilling drop tower. He added, “This is more than politics for me; the people of Wayanad have won a place in my heart.”
Priyanka Gandhi also emphasized that the landslide’s damage was limited to specific areas but has created a broader perception of risk. Meeting with affected homestay owners, she noted they have struggled to pay their staff since the disaster. She reassured potential tourists, saying, “Wayanad is safe and absolutely beautiful.”
The landslides, triggered by torrential rain on July 30, led to significant damage in villages like Punjirimattom, Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Vellarimala, impacting the local economy. Returning to Wayanad for the bypoll, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi have championed renewed tourism to support the region’s recovery, believing Wayanad embodies the best of India.
