Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, stated on Monday that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) had unanimously endorsed the concept of a national caste census and referred to it as a “progressive and powerful step.” He added that the Chief Ministers of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh concur that it is a crucial step.

While addressing a press conference after concluding the CWC meeting, Rahul Gandhi said, “There is a very big decision taken today by the Congress Working Committee. Unanimously the Congress Working Committee has supported the idea of a caste census in the country. It is a progressive, historic and powerful step for the emancipation of the poor people in our country.”
“Our CMs (Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan) also believe that it is a very important step to take and are also considering this and actioning on this,” he added.

Gandhi criticized PM Modi for not conducting a nationwide caste survey and claimed that the Prime Minister had been using deceitful means to avoid the survey, saying, “The PM is incapable of conducting the caste census. Our three out of four chief marketing officers are OBCs. Only one OBC member makes up the BJP’s ten chief ministers. How many BJP chief ministers are OBCs? The PM’s primary purpose is to divert OBC attention from more pressing matters. The purpose of PM is to divert… He will continue to bring up lots of distractions in the future. This (the caste census) is a decision based on justice rather than politics, he added.
