A first-year medical student at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur Patan, Gujarat, tragically died following an alleged ragging incident. The student, Anil Methania, was reportedly forced to stand for three hours as part of an “introduction” ritual conducted by senior students. This term, often associated with ragging, refers to activities where seniors harass freshers under the guise of familiarizing them with the institution.
Collapse After Prolonged Standing
According to reports, Anil collapsed and became unconscious after being made to stand for hours. He was rushed to the hospital, where he informed the police that the incident was due to ragging. Tragically, he passed away shortly after recording his statement. The body has been sent for an autopsy, and its findings are expected to provide further clarity on the cause of his death.
Family Demands Justice
Anil’s cousin, Dharmendra, revealed that their family resides in Surendranagar district, around 150 km from the college. Speaking about the incident, he said, “We received a call from the college yesterday and were told that Anil collapsed and was hospitalised. When we reached here, we came to know that third-year students ragged him. We want justice.”
