Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Masoud Pezeshkian, a reformist, on winning Iran’s presidential runoff, as reported by the Kremlin on July 6.

Putin expressed his hope that Pezeshkian’s leadership would enhance cooperation between Russia and Iran and allow both countries to work together on international issues.

Pezeshkian won with over 16 million votes, about 54%, while his opponent, ultraconservative Saeed Jalili, received more than 13 million votes, around 44%, out of roughly 30 million votes cast in the second round.

The election, initially set for 2025, was held early due to the sudden death of ultraconservative President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. The first round, held on June 28, featured four candidates.
