The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) held a crucial meeting to address the pressing issue of drug addiction in the state’s prisons. The meeting, presided over by PSHRC Chairperson Justice Sant Parkash, brought together key stakeholders and experts to deliberate on the challenges within the prison systems of Punjab and Chandigarh.
During the meeting, ADGP Arun Pal Singh highlighted the pressing issue of drug addiction among convicts, with recent studies indicating that 42% of prisoners grapple with addiction.
Justice Sant Parkash, in his address, emphasized the critical importance of adhering to the guidelines set forth by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to safeguard the well-being of prisoners. He pointed out substantial lapses in compliance, which have resulted in tuberculosis-related fatalities within the prison facilities.
The meeting emphasized the need for comprehensive health assessments during admission and underscored the importance of implementing robust measures to prevent suicides and ensure transparency in cases of custodial deaths or police actions.
The officials stressed the imperative need to establish drug de-addiction centers within the prison systems, considering the alarming prevalence of substance abuse among inmates. Furthermore, the meeting highlighted the fundamental right to healthcare for every individual, including those in custodial care, and discussed the steps required to tackle the widespread issue of drug addiction within the prison population.
