In response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Michaung in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin reached out to PM Modi, seeking an immediate interim relief fund of Rs 5060 crores. CM Stalin also urged the PM to dispatch a central team to assess the cyclone’s damages in the state. He inspected the affected areas personally and lauded the efforts of government machinery, urging more individuals to join hands in relief work.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Michaung has weakened into a deep depression over central coastal Andhra Pradesh. The system moved north-northeastwards and was expected to further weaken into a Low-Pressure Area within the next 12 hours.
The impact of the cyclone led to tragic consequences in Chennai, where 17 deaths were reported due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall. Subsequently, the Chennai Police confirmed six additional deaths on Wednesday. Instances of drowning and electrocution were reported, with authorities offering medical aid to those affected.
The Greater Chennai Police coordinated with the Greater Chennai Corporation to issue flood warnings to residents along the Adyar River bank, aiming to ensure their safety. Additionally, Chennai police officials, including Additional Commissioner of Police (South) Prem Anand Sinha and DC Mount, provided relief and rescue operations in Manapakkam and Thuraipakkam.
To alleviate the flooding, the Coimbatore Corporation dispatched twelve 41-HP motors to Chennai to assist in flood relief operations, demonstrating solidarity in responding to the calamity.
The state machinery has been proactively responding to distress messages on social media, extending timely assistance, and collaborating with various authorities to address the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung.
