On Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu sent greetings to the people of Kerala in honor of Onam, saying that we should use this occasion to thank nature for her innumerable blessings.

Taking to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Rashtrapati Bhavan said, “Greetings to all fellow citizens and our brothers and sisters in Kerala on Onam! On this auspicious occasion we express our gratitude to Mother nature for the countless bounties. May this harvest festival usher in prosperity and the spirit of harmony among all.”

The revered King Mahabali, also known as Maveli, returns during the ten-day Thiru-Onam or Thiruvonam celebrations, which are filled with excitement and joy. This colorful festival serves as a symbol of Kerala’s illustrious cultural heritage. Atham celebrations on August 20 marked the beginning of Kerala’s 10-day Onam festival. It is a celebration in honor of Vamana and King Mahabali. People began erecting floral carpets (Pookkalam) in front of their residences and establishments to welcome Mahabali. Today is the start of celebrations of all kinds in classrooms, universities, workplaces, and other places.

People typically don traditional kasavu saris and mundu (dhoti) during the Onam festival. It is a time when friends and family get together and exchange gifts, such as brand-new dresses. One of the highlights of the Onam celebrations is the preparation of Onasadya, a special vegetarian feast. Onam is marked by the preparation of unusual food items at home and distribution to others. The Malayalam calendar’s Chingam month, which ushers in Onam, is celebrated. This is a celebration of the harvest.
