Srinagar, May 13th: The fourth phase of voting for the 18th Lok Sabha concluded peacefully today with an unprecedented (tentative figure)_% voter turnout across Srinagar, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Budgam, and Shopian districts. This marks a significant surge from the 2019 elections’ 14.43% turnout. Notably, there were no boycotts, and every polling station recorded voter participation, reflecting a remarkable enthusiasm among the electorate.
The historic turnout surpasses previous records set since the onset of terrorism in Kashmir. While the 1996 elections saw a peak of 40.94% turnout, subsequent years witnessed varying levels, with 2014 recording 25.86%.
Polling was conducted across 2,135 polling stations in the Srinagar Parliamentary constituency, with live webcasting ensuring transparency throughout the process. From the early hours, voters displayed unwavering commitment, forming long queues across all five districts, showcasing a diverse demographic exercising their democratic right peacefully.
Under the vigilant oversight of Chief Electoral Officer Sh. Pandurang K. Pole (IAS), the polling progress was closely monitored from the Command and Control Center at ICCC-HMT, Bemina, and the CEO Office, Srinagar. Notably, these centers have been operational 24*7 since March 16th, underscoring the commitment to fair and transparent elections.
Polling statistics revealed a steady rise throughout the day, with assembly segment-wise variations. Kangan witnessed the highest turnout at 55.55%, while Habba Kadal recorded the lowest at 13.25%. This diversity in participation underscores the widespread engagement in the electoral process across the region.
A total of 17,47,810 electors exercised their franchise, facilitated by over 8,500 polling staff ensuring essential amenities and inclusive facilities at every polling station. Notably, special provisions were made for women, specially-abled individuals, and youth, alongside environmental initiatives like green polling stations.
The success of the electoral process reflects the collective efforts of stakeholders, including political parties, journalists, and security personnel. Moreover, the substantial turnout of Kashmiri migrants, with 6132 voters exercising their rights, underscores the inclusivity and significance of this election.
