President Murmu Accepts Punjab Governor’s Resignation, Announces New Appointments And Reshuffles

President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Banwarilal Purohit as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Alongside this, she has announced new appointments for governors in various states and a reshuffle of several positions.

Resignation of Banwarilal Purohit
Banwarilal Purohit, aged 83, resigned from his position in February, citing personal reasons. His resignation letter stated, “Due to personal reasons and certain other commitments, I tender my resignation from the post of Governor and Administrator of UT Chandigarh. Please accept the same and oblige.” Purohit’s tenure in Punjab, which began in September 2021, was marked by frequent conflicts with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

New Governor Appointments
The President has announced the following new governor appointments:

  • Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde – Governor of Rajasthan
  • Jishnu Dev Varma – Governor of Telangana
  • Om Prakash Mathur – Governor of Sikkim
  • Santosh Kumar Gangwar – Governor of Jharkhand
  • Ramen Deka – Governor of Chhattisgarh
  • CH Vijayashankar – Governor of Meghalaya

Reshuffles

  • CP Radhakrishnan, currently Governor of Jharkhand with additional charge of Telangana, has been appointed as Governor of Maharashtra.
  • Gulab Chand Kataria, currently Governor of Assam, has been appointed as Governor of Punjab and Chandigarh.
  • Lakshman Prasad Acharya, currently Governor of Sikkim, has been appointed as Governor of Assam and given additional charge as Governor of Manipur.
