Delhi got the Rekha Gupta as the 9th Chief Minister from BJP party. Delhi India is a democratic country and all the citizens are allowed to elect their leader through cast their vote. Delhi’s first state assembly election was held in 1955. Since then, the capital has seen many influential leaders as its Chief Ministers. 

Rekha Gupta – Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) (Newly Elected)

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) marked its seat in the national capital after 27 years with Rekha Gupta, member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Shalimar Bagh, taking oath on 20th January as the Chief Minister.

She became the fourth woman to be the Chief Minister of Delhi by securing 29,000 votes against Bandana Kumari as opposition from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Atishi Marlena (Interim)- AAP, 2024-2025

Atishi Marlena was the 3rd woman CM of Delhi and the youngest of them all at the age of 43. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi took the oath on September 21, 2024. Atishi has a strong educational background as an Oxford University graduate. During her tenure, she advocated for student and women’s rights.

The main highlight of her tenure is her work in the educational background of Delhi, as she worked for the betterment of Delhi’s Public School system. Atishi introduced various programs for better teacher training so that the teachers ensure better education qualities for the students.

Arvind Kejriwal – AAP, 2013-14, 2015-2024

Arvind Kejriwal served as the Chief Minister of Delhi for one year. AAP made a massive comeback in the 2015 state assembly elections. Arvind Kejriwal focused on hospitals and educational reforms. He worked for the betterment of Delhi citizens by providing free electricity to all, and he worked on women’s empowerment by providing free bus service.

President’s Rule – 2014-15

Following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation, the capital was left under President’s rule for a year.

Sheila Dikshit – Congress, 1998-2013

Sheila Dikshit of the Indian National Congress (INC) was the longest-serving Chief minister of Delhi. She focused on significant development in the infrastructure of the capital, including the improvement and betterment of the public transport system (mainly the Delhi Metro) and the 2010 Commonwealth Games preparations.

Sushma Swaraj – BJP, October 1998- December 1998

Sushma Swaraj of the Bhartiya Janata Party was the Chief Minister for a brief period. Swaraj focused on the city’s governance, including public infrastructure, women’s safety and health. However, her tenure was cut short due to internal issues within the BJP and the party’s inability to maintain a majority in the Delhi Assembly. As a result of the internal conflict, Sushma Swaraj resigned from the position, and the capital went under the President’s rule for a brief period.

Sahib Singh Verma – BJP, 1996-98

Sahib Singh Verma came into power as the capital’s chief minister in 1196. His tenure highlighted a focus on infrastructure development, public health, and education. He worked on issues such as water supply, housing, and transport. Sahib’s administration also prioritized the welfare of the underprivileged.

Madan Lal Khurana – BJP, 1993-96

Madan Lal Khurana served as the chief minister of the national capital from December 1996 to February 1998. During his term, he focused on infrastructure development, including roads, flyovers, and improving water supply. Khurana mainly emphasized urban development and infrastructure projects.

Gurmukh Nihal Singh – Congress, 1955-56

Gurmukh Nihal Singh served as the second Chief Minister of Delhi from February 1955 to November 1956. Singh’s term saw the capital’s transition from a Part-C state to a Union Territory due to the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, which led to the abolition of the Chief Minister’s office.

Chaudhary Brahm Prakash – Congress, 1952-55

Chaudhary Brahm Singh was the first Chief Minister of Delhi. As the capital’s first Chief Minister, Chaudhary Brahm Prakash focused on establishing the foundational governance structures of the newly formed legislative assembly.

Through the years, Delhi has had various influential leaders, starting from 1952 to 2025. All the leaders had a major hand in keeping the governance of Delhi steady and smooth. Governments focused heavily on the state’s infrastructure and the betterment of the citizens, which can be seen in the state today. Each government has done its work, be it anything from reforms to education and healthcare.
