BSP Chief Mayawati Reaffirms Nephew Akash Anand As Her Successor

BSP leader Mayawati reinstated her nephew Akash Anand as the party’s national coordinator and declared him her political successor on Sunday. The decision came during a meeting of party officials in Lucknow.

In May of this year, Akash Anand was removed from his position as national coordinator and as Mayawati’s successor. Mayawati had announced this decision, stating that he would be relieved of these roles until he gained political maturity.

In several social media updates in May, Mayawati reiterated the party’s dedication to Dr. BR Ambedkar’s ideals and the “ongoing movement for social change.” She announced Akash Anand’s appointment as BSP’s national coordinator and proclaimed him her successor to propel forward this movement.

“But in the larger interest of the party and the movement, he is being removed from both these important responsibilities until he attains full maturity,” she had said.

The decision to remove Akash Anand had surprised political analysts, as Mayawati did not provide a specific reason for his dismissal from the post.

Akash Anand assumed the role of BSP’s national coordinator in 2019 following restructuring within the party after it severed ties with the Samajwadi Party. He was designated as Mayawati’s successor in December of last year.

During the Lok Sabha elections, Akash Anand faced charges of violating the Model Code of Conduct for using inappropriate language at a campaign rally in Uttar Pradesh.

“This government is a bulldozer government and a government of traitors. The party that leaves its youth hungry and enslaves its elderly is a terrorist government. Taliban runs such a government in Afghanistan,” the BSP leader had said.

In the 2019 general elections, Mayawati’s BSP secured 10 Lok Sabha seats, but in the 2024 elections, the party did not win any seats. Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, formerly allied with BSP, emerged as Uttar Pradesh’s largest party by winning 37 Lok Sabha seats.
