Police Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani, who bravely faced a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist attack while playing cricket in Srinagar in October, succumbed to his injuries at AIIMS here Thursday. Despite extensive efforts by the medical team, Wani passed away this afternoon, leaving behind his expectant wife.
Playing cricket at Eidgah ground on October 29, Wani was targeted by a lone terrorist who fired three shots at close range, fatally hitting him in the eye, abdomen, and neck. His teammates pursued the assailant, who fired into the air and fled. Wani received initial treatment in Soura but was later airlifted to AIIMS Delhi, where he remained on life support.
Survived by his wife, father, and brother, Wani’s tragic demise has deeply affected his colleagues and loved ones, emphasized Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police R R Swain. Additional Director General of Police Vijay Kumar expressed condolences, noting that every effort was made to save Wani.
Identified as Basit Dar from Kulgam, the active terrorist responsible for the attack has been named by former chief minister Omar Abdullah and condemned by CPI-M leader Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami. The Resistance Front, a shadow group of Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility, sparking concerns about the ongoing targeted killings in the valley.As the nation mourns the loss of a courageous officer, Jammu and Kashmir Police stand united in grief, offering support to Wani’s family during this challenging time.
