Grammy-winning artist P!nk delivered a powerful performance at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Thursday, held at the United Center in Chicago. Joined by her daughter, Willow Sage Hart, the duo took the stage to perform P!nk’s 2017 hit, “What About Us,” captivating the audience with their heartfelt rendition.

Dressed in black and accompanied by minimal backup—just a few singers and an acoustic guitar—P!nk and Willow harmonized beautifully on the protest song that P!nk co-wrote. The performance resonated with the crowd, especially following emotional presentations by Gabby Giffords and other individuals impacted by gun violence.

The mother-daughter pair’s performance was marked by its simplicity and emotional depth as they sang, “What about all the broken happy ever afters? What about all the plans that ended in disaster?” Their heartfelt delivery added to the evening’s somber yet hopeful tone.

Earlier in the evening, The Chicks, the Texas trio of Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire, and Emily Strayer, also performed, offering a stirring three-part harmony without their usual instrumental accompaniment. Their stripped-down performance echoed the style in which they sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 2020 convention, though this time, it was a live rendition in contrast to the remote, prerecorded version from the COVID-19-limited convention.

On Thursday night, “The Star-Spangled Banner” was moved to prime time, a shift from the previous nights of the convention, just ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris‘s scheduled speech, marking a poignant moment in the evening’s events.
