Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a special gift, the jersey of the 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning Argentinian football team, featuring the name of the team’s captain, Lionel Messi. It was gifted by the president of YPF from Argentina, Pablo Gonzalez, on the side-lines of the Indian Energy Week in Karnataka’s Bengaluru.

Argentina last year lifted the coveted FIFA World Cup for the third time, defeating defending champion France in a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout in Qatar. As a captain, Messi played a decisive role throughout the tournament. The South American nation last won the World Cup in 1986 under the captaincy of the great Diego Maradona.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Argentina after their triumph over France in the final in December 2022. He further added that millions of Indians burst into joy and celebrated Argentina’s victory.

PM Modi tweeted that the FIFA 2022 final was a remarkable match and will be remembered as one of the most exciting matches! The entire Argentina team played superb football throughout the tournament. Indian football fans celebrated their victory in every nook and corner of the country.

“This will be remembered as one of the most thrilling football matches! Congrats to Argentina on becoming FIFA World Cup Champions! They’ve played brilliantly throughout the tournament. “Millions of Indian fans were favouring Argentina and Messi and became happy after the magnificent victory!” PM Modi tweeted.

Interestingly, Argentina lost its opening match of the 2022 World Cup against Saudi Arabia. After that, the team came back like a wounded tiger and emerged champion.
