Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, from October 22-24. This visit will mark Modi’s second trip to Russia within two months, following his recent official visit to Ukraine.

The Kazan summit, hosted by Russia—currently the chair of BRICS—will be the first since the group’s expansion in January, which added Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as new full members. The BRICS bloc now comprises ten nations, including the original members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

During a recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Modi confirmed his participation in the summit. The two leaders discussed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Modi reiterating India’s commitment to a peaceful resolution. Modi’s visit to Ukraine was notable as it was the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Ukraine’s independence, and included discussions on defense, trade, pharmaceuticals, green energy, and education.

Modi’s previous trip to Russia was for the 22nd India-Russia Summit, where he was honored with the ‘Order of St. Andrew the Apostle’ by President Putin for his role in strengthening bilateral relations. The meeting in Moscow highlighted the importance of the India-Russia partnership and included a private dinner at Putin’s residence.

The BRICS Summit in Kazan will be a significant event, reflecting on the expanded group’s goals and cooperation under Russia’s chairmanship.
