Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his third term in office on Monday morning by authorizing the release of the 17th installment of the PM Kisan Nidhi. This initiative is set to benefit 9.3 crore farmers and distribute approximately Rs 20,000 crores.

Having taken his oath of office for a historic third consecutive term on Sunday, PM Modi arrived at his South Bloc office and signed the file related to this significant farmer welfare scheme, launched in 2019. This immediate action post-swearing-in underscores his and his government’s commitment to the welfare of farmers.

Emphasizing his dedication, PM Modi stated, “Ours is a Government fully committed to Kisan Kalyan. It is therefore fitting that the first file signed on taking charge is related to farmer welfare. We want to keep working even more for the farmers and the agriculture sector in the times to come.”

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme aims to provide financial assistance to cultivable landholding farmer families across India, helping them with agricultural expenses and domestic needs. Launched in February 2019, the scheme transfers Rs 6,000 annually in three equal installments of Rs 2,000 directly into the Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts of the farmers.

The responsibility for identifying beneficiaries and uploading their verified data onto the PM-KISAN portal lies with the respective State/UT governments. To date, over Rs 2.42 lakh crore has been disbursed to more than 11 crore beneficiary farmer families through various installments. The scheme currently covers over 9.53 crore farmers whose land details are registered on the PM-KISAN Portal.

President Droupadi Murmu administered the Oaths of Office and Secrecy to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his 71 Members of the Council of Ministers during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The event was attended by leaders from neighboring countries and other dignitaries. Portfolio allocations for the newly sworn-in ministers are expected to be finalized following a Cabinet meeting later in the day.

PM Modi led the BJP-led NDA to its third consecutive victory in the recent Lok Sabha polls. The BJP secured an absolute majority in the 2014 and 2019 elections with 282 and 303 seats respectively. In 2024, PM Modi’s NDA coalition holds 292 seats in Parliament, with a focus on transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.
