To honour India’s triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 war, Vijay Diwas is observed on December 16. Pakistan signed the surrender document in Dhaka on December 16, 1971, ending the 13-day India-Pakistan War. The Pakistan Army’s surrender to Indian forces came to an end with the surrender of almost 93,000 men. India proclaimed itself to be a powerful regional force after this resounding victory.
For West Pakistan, the formation of Bangladesh and Pakistan was a catastrophic event with lingering effects. Pakistan was vanquished mentally in addition to Dacca’s physical collapse. The two-nation theory—which held that the Muslims in the subcontinent were a single nation—was disproved. Pakistan continues to look for an explanation for the mutilation.
