Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to tribal leaders such as Sidhu-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano on Hul Diwas, recognizing their courage and sacrifice. In a statement shared on X, PM Modi emphasized the historical significance of Hul Diwas as a day dedicated to honoring the resilience of India’s tribal societies against colonial oppression.

“On this auspicious day, I pay my respectful tribute to tribal heroes like Sidhu-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano,” PM Modi wrote. He highlighted their unwavering spirit in resisting the atrocities of the British Empire, which continues to inspire the nation.

June 30 marks the 169th anniversary of the Santhal Rebellion, known as Santhal Hul, a pivotal event in Indian history. PM Modi underscored the bravery of Sidhu-Kanhu and their Santhal comrades, who took up arms against foreign rulers in 1855, setting a courageous precedent two years before India’s first war of independence in 1857.

In his Mann Ki Baat program, PM Modi further emphasized the significance of Hul Diwas, praising Sidhu-Kanhu for uniting thousands of Santhals in Jharkhand’s Santhal Parganas region to confront British colonial rule. He highlighted their historic resistance as a testament to the strength and determination of India’s tribal communities in the face of adversity.
