Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed that Lakshadweep has witnessed numerous developmental projects during his government’s tenure over the past decade. He expressed the Centre’s unwavering commitment to the progress of the islands. Addressing a public function upon his arrival at Agatti Airport, Modi highlighted the significant possibilities that Lakshadweep presents, pointing out that the islands had faced neglect for many years after gaining independence.

Optimistic about the recently introduced ice plant at Agatti, the Prime Minister emphasized its potential to enhance seafood processing capabilities on the island. He acknowledged the establishment of both an airport and an ice plant on Agatti. Modi also mentioned the commencement of tuna fish exports from Lakshadweep, contributing to increased income for the fishermen in the union territory.

Discussing new development initiatives, the PM referred to the inauguration of a solar plant and an aviation fuel depot, aimed at addressing Lakshadweep’s electricity and energy needs. He specifically noted the provision of tapped water connections to all houses on Agatti Island and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring houses, toilets, electricity, and cooking gas for the underprivileged.

Modi affirmed, “The Government of India is working with full commitment for the development of the entire Lakshadweep, including Agatti.”

Subsequently, the Prime Minister chaired a review meeting to assess Lakshadweep’s progress. He underscored the government’s dedication to improving the quality of life for the people of Lakshadweep, focusing on infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and economic opportunities.

During his visit, Modi is set to inaugurate and dedicate development projects exceeding Rs 1,150 crore. One transformative initiative includes the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project, aimed at overcoming slow internet speed challenges on Lakshadweep Island. The completed project, to be inaugurated by the PM, will increase internet speed by over 100 times, connecting Lakshadweep through a dedicated submarine optical fiber cable.

The Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat, set to produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water daily, will also be inaugurated. Additionally, Modi will dedicate Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) in all households on Agatti and Minicoy islands.

Other projects to be inaugurated include the first-ever battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep at Kavaratti, the foundation stone laying for the renovation of the primary health care facility in Kalpeni, and the construction of five model Anganwadi centers in Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti, and Minicoy.
