Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Guyanese President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali during the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Guyana. Sharing the details on social media platform X, PM Modi described the interaction as an “excellent meeting,” highlighting the strong bond President Ali shares with India.
In his post, PM Modi noted that the discussions covered a wide range of topics, emphasizing developmental cooperation between India and Guyana. “In our talks, we reviewed the developmental cooperation between our nations. This includes sectors like skill development, capacity building, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, education, and energy,” he said.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Georgetown, with photos of the event shared on his social media handles.
At a joint press interaction, President Ali described the meeting as “fruitful,” emphasizing the shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and addressing regional and global challenges. “PM Modi’s visit represents a significant milestone in enhancing cooperation between the two nations across multiple sectors,” he said.
Both leaders oversaw the signing of several key agreements focusing on critical areas, including hydrocarbons, healthcare, agriculture, and technology transfer. President Ali also highlighted India’s commitment to supporting Guyana’s sugar industry and advancing collaboration in infrastructure, education, and human capital development.

Expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome, PM Modi recalled his personal connection to Guyana, having visited the nation 24 years ago as a private citizen.
“It is a significant milestone that an Indian Prime Minister has come here after 56 years. I have a personal connection with Guyana. Twenty-four years ago, I had the opportunity to come here as an ordinary citizen. Today, I am fortunate to visit as Prime Minister,” he remarked.
Later on Thursday, PM Modi is set to address the Guyanese Parliament, marking another significant milestone in India’s global diplomatic outreach.
