Qamar Sheikh, a Pakistani woman with a long-standing tradition, will once again tie a rakhi to PM Modi on Raksha Bandhan, August 19. This year marks the 30th consecutive time Sheikh has performed this ritual, a gesture that symbolizes the special bond she shares with Modi.

Handmade Rakhi for Special Occasion

For each Raksha Bandhan, Sheikh meticulously crafts the rakhi herself, never purchasing them from stores. “I make many rakhis every year before Raksha Bandhan, and I select the one I like most to tie on his wrist,” she told India Today. This year’s rakhi is particularly special, designed on velvet with pearls, metal embroidery, and tikki.

COVID-19 Disruption

Sheikh’s tradition faced a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, 2021, and 2022, as she was unable to travel. However, she resumed her annual journey last year and is excited to continue the tradition this year.

A Personal Connection

Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Sheikh moved to India after marrying Moshin Sheikh in 1981. She first met Narendra Modi in 1990, introduced by the late Dr. Swaroop Singh, then Governor of Gujarat. Singh had described Sheikh as his daughter, and Modi responded by acknowledging her as his sister.

Wishes Fulfilled

Sheikh’s initial wish was for PM Modi to become the Chief Minister of Gujarat, which eventually came true. During a subsequent Raksha Bandhan meeting, PM Modi inquired about her new wish. Sheikh expressed her hope for Modi to become Prime Minister, a wish that also materialized.

Despite the years of interruption, Sheikh’s commitment to this tradition remains unwavering, and she continues to celebrate the bond she cherishes with Narendra Modi each year.
