You can’t talk about India without talking about its flavorful dishes. If you are an India, there is no way that you can say ‘NO’ to a plate of ‘Rajma Chawal’! 

Rajma is a comfort food made from red kidney beans. It is a nutrition-rich, healthy, and tasty delicacy. However, the favourite dish of Indians is not originally from India, after all.

Origin in Mexico and Guatemala

Rajma was first cultivated over 7,500 years ago in the Mexico and Guatemala regions in Central America. The red kidney beans were loved by the indigenous people for their health benefits. It came to India through trade routes when the Portuguese and Spanish arrived in the 15th and 16th centuries. Portuguese played a major role in the transportation of Rajma in India.

Rajma Becomes India's Favorite

After entering India, Rajma quickly became a staple in India and adjusted to India's culinary landscape. Additionally, its name 'Rajma' is believed to have roots in the Sanskrit word 'Rajjika', meaning 'like a king'. Its popularity spread in the northern regions and became a primary source of plant-based protein.

Rajma Madra: A Royal Twist

Inspired by Kashmir's Wazwan cuisine, Himachal Pradesh gave Rajma a royal twist, with the creation of Rajma Madra. Rajma Madra is a luxurious curry dish, which is cooked in yoghurt-based gravy. Ghee, cardamom, and saffron are added to the dish to enhance the flavors. King Jayastambh of Chamba is often credited with the innovation of the dish.
