Two advanced centres of PGIMER which would prove to be a boon for this region have taken speed in their construction work. The 300-bed facility Neurosciences Centre and 300-bed facility Mother-Child Centre has uptaken after the Covid settles down here. It got delayed by a year due to Covid and is expected to be functional by end of the year 2022.

Being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 495.31 crore, the neurosciences centre is a 300-bed facility that will offer timely, affordable and advanced treatment for neurological and neuroscience disorders. PGIMER sees more than approximately 2 Lakh patients suffering neurological disorders in a year. Kumar Gaurav, Deputy Director Administration, PGIMER says, “We are expecting Advanced neurosciences centre and mother-child care centres would be operational by the end of next year.”

While sharing the PGIMER’s roadmap after the Covid settles down, Director Prof Jagat Ram says, “The construction work on Advanced Neurosciences Centre and Mother and Child Care Centre got affected due to Covid and we were unable to find labourers. After Covid numbers started falling, the construction work is progressing well and we hope to make both these super-speciality centres operational by the end of 2022.”

“We tried to cover the loss when things got back on track and we are satisfied with the pace of construction,” the director added.

A mother-child centre is also a 300-bed unit for improving obstetric and neonatal tertiary care and is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 485 crore within PGIMER.

Demarkation to start at Sarangpur land

At present, the PGIMER has 277 acres of land and is not left with much space for its future expansion. Under the 12th five-year plan, the institute has been sanctioned Rs 1,200 crore and has already got approval to open five centres including, Neuro Sciences Centre, Advanced Gastroenterology Diseases Centre, Cancer Centre, Trauma Centre, Mental Health Centre, and Urban and Rural Health Centre. As per Prof Ram, “ Land is bought at the cost of 180 Crores and demarkation for the centres would start soon.”

PGIMER’s satellite centre in Sangrur is now functional with its OPDs being operational. Work of Una and Ferozpur Satellite Centre projects costing 490 Crore each is allotted to the construction company. This has given a boost to healthcare facilities and eased patient load from that area. “We are striving hard to make our all projects fully functional in the coming year,” the director said.
