In a further escalation of tensions during the Winter Session, 49 opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) were suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the session, including prominent figures such as Farooq Abdullah, Supriya Sule, Dimple Yadav, and Shashi Tharoor. This action comes on the heels of the suspension of 33 MPs the day before, bringing the total number of suspended opposition parliamentarians to 141.

The decision to suspend the MPs was announced after the Lok Sabha faced disruptions, with opposition members raising slogans and displaying placards to press for their demands. The suspended MPs were seeking a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Parliament security breach on December 13.
The motion for suspension was brought by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi asserted that the opposition members had violated rules by showing placards and expressed disappointment that they had disrespected the Chair. He reminded us that all MPs had agreed not to resort to such actions in the new Parliament building.
On Monday, a total of 78 MPs—33 from Lok Sabha and 45 from Rajya Sabha—were suspended for the rest of the Winter Session following disruptions related to the demand for a statement from Amit Shah on the Parliament security breach incident. The ongoing suspensions and disruptions have raised concerns about the functioning of Parliament during the Winter Session, scheduled to conclude on December 22.
