On December 11, 2024, violence erupted in Parbhani city, Maharashtra, following the alleged vandalism of a replica of the Indian Constitution. In response, law enforcement agencies took immediate action to restore order.

Special Inspector General of Nanded, Shahaji Umap, reported that eight cases have been registered across different police stations concerning the incident. A total of 50 individuals were arrested at the scene during efforts to control the situation after stone-pelting occurred in the afternoon. Contrary to some reports, no arrests were made during a combing operation later that night.

The confrontation resulted in minor injuries to a Deputy Superintendent of Police and nine other police personnel. All injured officers are receiving medical treatment.

As of the latest reports, the situation in Parbhani has normalized. Additional manpower, including personnel from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), has been deployed to maintain peace. A route march was conducted in the morning to reassure residents. Planned events such as ‘rasta roko’ and bandhs in the Nanded range have not disrupted the current calm.

The registered cases primarily address offenses related to stone-pelting, damage to public property, and unlawful assembly. The 50 arrested individuals are implicated in these cases.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam called for an investigation to determine if the violence was orchestrated by political adversaries aiming to discredit the new government. He emphasized that any conspirators involved should face strict consequences.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar confirmed that law and order have been restored in Parbhani City, stating, “The situation has been under control since last night. Law and order is fine there.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi criticised the BJP-led Mahayuti government, highlighting delays in cabinet formation and questioning the administration’s priorities amid the unrest.

Parbhani District Magistrate Raghunath Khandu Gawade urged citizens to maintain peace and assured that the police administration is actively managing the situation. Additional police forces have been called in to ensure tranquility.

Preliminary findings suggest the accused may have mental health issues, and relevant documents have been recovered during the investigation.

The administration continues to appeal to the public to remain calm and not to overemphasize the incident, as efforts are ongoing to maintain peace and order in the region.
