UK Election 2024: British Indian MPs Elected To UK House Of Commons

As the UK election results unfold, Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is on track to secure a sweeping victory, potentially marking a significant shift in British politics. The Conservatives, led by Rishi Sunak, are expected to face substantial losses, with projections suggesting Labour could secure 410 out of 650 parliamentary seats.

This resurgence for Labour follows their worst performance in decades five years ago, signaling the end of a 14-year Conservative-led era if exit polls hold true. The anticipated majority of 170 seats would provide Labour with a strong mandate for governance.

Among the notable outcomes is the rise in British Indian representation in Parliament. In the 2024 General Election, 107 British-Indian candidates contested for the 680 seats, with several emerging victorious:

British Indian MPs Elected:

Shivani Raja

  • Shivani Raja secured Leicester East for Labour, defeating strong contenders including former MPs Claude Webbe and Keith Vaz. A Leicester native, Raja studied locally at Herrick Primary, Soar Valley College, and Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth II College. She holds a First Class Honours degree in Cosmetic Science from De Montfort University.

Kanishka Narayan

  • Kanishka Narayan made history by becoming Wales’ first MP from a minority ethnic background. Born in India, Narayan moved to Cardiff at the age of 12. He earned a scholarship to Eton, later studying at Oxford and Stanford before pursuing a career in civil service. Narayan defeated former Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns to claim the seat for Labour.

The election also saw an increase in the number of MPs of Indian origin in the outgoing House of Commons, reflecting growing diversity and representation in UK politics.
