Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar urged India to improve relations between the two nations, emphasizing, “It takes two to tango.” Speaking at a press conference, Dar highlighted the importance of fostering a conducive environment to strengthen ties, particularly in trade.

Economic Challenges Driving Diplomatic Efforts

Dar’s remarks come as Pakistan continues to face significant economic challenges, including high inflation, political instability, and the aftermath of devastating floods in 2022. Structural issues have led to repeated crises in meeting the food and energy needs of the population.

Frequent reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and financial assistance from nations like Saudi Arabia and China has strained Pakistan’s low foreign exchange reserves. The suspension of trade with India has further exacerbated economic woes, as goods must be imported from distant countries at higher costs.

Regional Collaboration and SAARC Revival

In related diplomatic developments, Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus recently met with Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif at the D-8 summit in Cairo. They discussed strengthening ties through increased trade, cultural exchange, and the revival of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

Yunus emphasized resolving longstanding issues from 1971, urging Pakistan to settle these matters for future generations. Sharif reassured his commitment to strengthening ties, stating, “We are looking forward to improving our relationship with our brother-in-country Bangladesh.”

Looking Ahead

Dar accepted an invitation to visit Bangladesh in February, potentially marking a step forward in enhancing regional collaboration. Meanwhile, his call to India highlights Pakistan’s intent to foster better bilateral relations despite current challenges.
