A sharp rise in road accidents has resulted in 150 fatalities in Karachi within the first two months of 2025, marking a 74.4% increase compared to last year, according to Geo News.

Fatal Accidents and Rising Death Toll

On Friday night, a dumper truck driving the wrong way on Hub River Road in Baldia crashed into a rickshaw, killing a man and injuring four others, including his son.

The victim, who had traveled from Quetta’s Pishin to Karachi for his son’s wedding preparations, lost his life in the accident. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver fled the scene after the crash.

This accident adds to the grim tally, with Karachi recording 69 fatalities in January and 40 in February. Notably, 47 deaths involved heavy vehicles, and victims ranged in age from 2 to 75 years old.

Authorities Launch Crackdown on Traffic Violations

  • 4,106 vehicles inspected
  • 1,856 vehicles fined
  • 88 drivers arrested
  • 195 vehicles seized
  • Fines totaling over ₹3.1 million imposed

Key Violations Identified

During inspections, authorities found:

Government’s Stand on Road Safety

Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon emphasized that road safety and strict enforcement of traffic laws are a top priority.

He warned transport operators to comply with regulations or face legal action, stating that reckless driving and unfit vehicles pose a serious threat to public safety. The crackdown will continue to reduce road accidents and enhance traffic discipline.

As traffic-related fatalities rise, authorities urge citizens and transport operators to follow road safety guidelines to prevent further tragedies.
