In a shocking incident, the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, a revered icon in Sikh history, was defaced by a group of protesters led by Hosaam Hamdan, identified as a Palestinian activist. The act of vandalism, which took place in Brampton, has sparked outrage among Sikh leaders and the broader community, leading to urgent calls for action against the perpetrators.

Harmeet Singh Kalka, President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), strongly condemned the incident, stating, “Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji, a towering figure symbolizing Sikh pride, bravery, and unity, deserves honor and respect, not disgraceful vandalism. This act is a direct attack on the values of peaceful coexistence and diversity, which form the foundation of any civilized society.”

Kalka urged Canadian authorities to take immediate and decisive action against the individuals responsible, stressing the need to prevent such divisive incidents in the future. Manjinder Singh Sirsa, National Secretary of the BJP, also voiced his condemnation on social media, labeling the act “disgraceful” and a threat to peace and tolerance. He called for swift action from Canadian officials to prevent future occurrences.

Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton, clarified that the incident did not happen within city limits but nonetheless condemned the act. On social media, he stated, “Maharaja Ranjit Singh, celebrated for his bravery and leadership, is a symbol of Sikh heritage. Defacing this monument disrespects that legacy and damages community unity. I expect those responsible to be held accountable.”

The statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founder of the Sikh Empire, stands as a symbol of strength and leadership within the Sikh community. The desecration of the statue has triggered widespread calls for justice from Sikh leaders and political figures, as the global Sikh community demands respect for their heritage and accountability for this act of intolerance.
