Yogi government to move SC on HC’s civic poll order

On the issue of OBC reservation in the urban local body elections, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that the state government will set up a commission.

Earlier the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court rejected the state government’s draft notification. Allahabad HC asked the state government to hold civic polls without reservation for the OBCs.

Meanwhile, against the high court order, the government may also approach the Supreme Court.

Taking to Twitter deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya tweeted, “The government will take a final decision on urban local body polls after consulting legal experts on all aspects of the court order.”

In the 200 municipal councils, 54 chairpersons’ seats are reserved for OBCs, of which 18 are also reserved for OBC women. 147 seats were reserved for OBC candidates, including 49 for OBC women reserved for the chairpersons’ seats in 545 nagar panchayats.

Moreover Apna Dal (S), an OBC party said the OBC reservation wasn’t justified in their view of holding civic polls sans.

“We will study the HC order in detail before taking a final decision but if required, we will even approach the Supreme Court on the issue,” the party tweeted

However, after this Samajwadi Party and other opposition parties are concerned that the ruling government is trying to end the OBC quota. “We won’t tolerate this injustice,” SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said.
