Winter’s first snowfall blankets Gulmarg and upper Jammu Kashmir

Gulmarg, the globally acclaimed tourist haven nestled in the heart of Jammu and Kashmir, has ushered in the winter season with its inaugural snowfall. The higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, including iconic locales such as Peer Ki Gali, Zojila, and Gulmarg, have been adorned with a fresh blanket of snow, while the lower altitudes experience a gentle drizzle.

This recent bout of snowfall has orchestrated a dramatic transformation in the weather across Kashmir. Mountainous terrains have borne the brunt of heavy snowfall since the onset of last night, while the plains witness a notable dip in temperatures, courtesy of relentless downpours. The Meteorological Department anticipates this atmospheric caprice to persist for the next 24 hours.

The picturesque streets and dwellings have been cocooned in a pristine white layer, rendering the roads treacherous for vehicular navigation. Consequently, as a precautionary measure, the Kishtwar-Anantnag and Mughal Road have been temporarily closed to traffic due to the snowfall in elevated regions. The closure, prompted by snow accumulation between Poshana and Peer Ki Gali, affects the vital highway linking the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu with the southern expanse of Shopian district in Kashmir.

Authorities have undertaken the removal of stranded vehicles to ensure safety.
The Western Disturbance, identified as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies, extends along Long. 70°E to the north of Lat. 26°N. Its influence has manifested in scattered to fairly widespread rainfall or snowfall over the regions of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-GilgitBaltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on November 10.
