Warship ‘Taragiri’ to be launched today

The officials announced on Saturday that the Project 17A Frigate Taragiri will be launched in Mumbai on September 11.

At Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the launching will take place. The event’s chief guest will be Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh, FOC-IN-C, Western Naval Command.

The fifth ship in the Project 17A Frigates fleet is called “Taragiri,” after a Himalayan hill range in Garhwal.

Seven ships are being built as part of the P17A programme, with four at MDL and three at GRSE. Between 2019 and 2022, two P17A Project ships were launched at MDL and two at GRSE.

The Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the nation’s first institution for all warship design activities, created the P17A ships internally.

In keeping with the nation’s steadfast efforts to achieve “Aatma Nirbharata,” 75% of the equipment and system orders for Project 17A ships are being placed with domestic companies, including MSMEs.
