Vice Presidential elections polling to be held today

Voting for the Vice Presidential elections will be held today as the tenure of M. Venkaiah Naidu comes to an end on 10 August 2022. The voting procedure will take place between 10 am to 5 pm. The votes will be counted immediately after the elections and the results will be declared by late Saturday evening.
The candidate for the vice-presidential position is elected through an electoral college consisting of members from both houses.
National Democratic Alliance’s vice-presidential candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Opposition’s candidate Margaret Alva are two contesting candidates for election.
Dhankhar filed his nomination papers on 18 July. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief J.P. Nadda, Union Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nitin Gadkari were present when Dhankhar filed his nomination.
Dhankhar joined politics in 1989 and is a lawyer by profession. He joined the office as the governor of West Bengal in July 2019.
On the other hand, Alva filed her nomination for the vice presidential elections on 19 July. The decision to select Alva as the candidate was taken at a meeting of the Opposition leaders of 17 parties at the residence of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar.
Alva is the former Rajasthan Governor, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) announced to support Opposition candidate Margaret Alva for the vice-presidential elections.
