Uttarakhand: 20-year-old commits suicide after failing in Agniveer test

After failing the Agniveer recruitment test, a 20-year-old man from Kapkot in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district allegedly committed suicide by ingesting a poison, according to authorities. He explained in a video why he took his own life on Monday. In the footage, the 20-year-old can be seen crying and displaying a bottle of poison.

I have no other option left. I did a lot of hard work. I was rejected from the race despite having an NCC [National Cadet Core] ‘C’ certificate [for attending a minimum of 75% of the total training parade]. …no one should try for Agniveer recruitment.”

In charge of Kapkot Police Station According to Vivek Chandra, the man ingested the poison after failing the test. All medical and legal requirements, including the post-mortem, have been completed.

In a tweet, Congress lawmaker Bhuwan Kapri called the man a promising youngster. “Despite having 100 marks for physical test, NCC ‘C’ certificate, and clearing the medical exam, his name was not on the merit list. It is an unfortunate incident. …ending your life is not an option for missing an opportunity in life and not being selected.”

At Kotdwar in the Pauri Garhwal district, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami kicked off the recruitment campaign for agniveers on August 17. After the Agniveers’ four-year service is finished, he assured, the state government will offer them jobs.

Later, Satpal Maharaj, a minister for Uttarakhand, wrote to Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, requesting that he check into complaints regarding the qualifying requirements at the Agniveer recruitment rallies. Maharaj said in a video message that the requirements for height and finishing time for the 1,600-meter event were not being satisfied. “Only candidates whose height is 170 cm or over are taken into consideration for selection. It does not meet the established eligibility standard of 163 cm.

This year saw the introduction of the Agniveer short-term defence recruitment programme.

On August 24, a 23-year-old man from Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district allegedly died by suicide for failing to get recruited.
