Until 2025, Boeing 787 aircraft are free from GPS-aided GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) compliance. The need for all Indian airlines operating Boeing 787 aircraft to use the GAGAN system compulsorily has been relaxed for three years by the ministry of civil aviation.
From now until December 31, 2025, airlines are not required to adopt the Gagan system.
An Indian satellite-based augmentation system called GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) was put in place to give aircraft the necessary navigational direction.
According to the ministry’s announcement dated August 18, 2022, it amended the National Civil Aviation Policy, 2016, in accordance with the authority granted by subsection (a) of section 26 of the National Civil Aviation Policy, 2016.
The National Civil Aviation Policy, 2016, was published in the Extraordinary Part 1 of the Gazette of India on June 29, 2016, and it was updated by notifications issued on January 7, 2019, and June 12, 2020.
GaGAN is a Space Based Augmentation System (SBAS) that ISRO and AAI collaboratively developed to offer the best navigational services across Indian FIRs with the option of expanding to neighbouring FIRs.
GAGAN is a network of satellites and ground stations that offer GPS signal adjustments, improving position accuracy. The ICAO’s navigational standards for accuracy, integrity, and availability cannot be satisfied by GPS alone. GAGAN corrects for timing, satellite orbit, and GPS signal errors brought on by ionospheric disturbances. It also provides essential data on the condition of each satellite.
