UN body votes in US-backed candidate to control future of global internet

A United Nations body responsible for shaping global internet development – the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) – voted to appoint Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the US-backed candidate, as the group’s secretary general.
The win of Bogdan-Martin over chief rival Rashid Ismailov on Thursday is significant in the backdrop of wider US-Russia tensions over the Ukraine war and fears of growing censorship online by authoritarian regimes, reported CNN. Bogdan-Martin, a nearly 30-year veteran of the ITU born in New Jersey, beat Ismailov by winning 139 votes out of 172. Ismailov won just 25 votes. Bogdan-Martin will be the first woman ever to lead the ITU.
“Humbled & honoured to be elected @ITU Secretary-General & grateful for the trust & confidence Member States placed in me,” Bogdan-Martin tweeted on Thursday.
“Ready to lead an ITU that will inspire, include & innovate, so that everyone, everywhere can harness the power of #digital to transform their lives,” she added.
