Ukraine Seeks Security Guarantees Amid Uncertain US Support In Trump Era

With Donald Trump set for his second term as US President, Ukraine is reportedly shifting its approach to ending the war with Russia, prioritizing security assurances over territorial concerns. According to The New York Times, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains adamant that surrendering land is not an option. Still, the emphasis now appears to be on securing guarantees that would protect Ukraine from future invasions, especially given Trump’s stated reluctance to support Ukraine militarily or economically.

In light of the upcoming Trump presidency and uncertain US support, Ukraine is accelerating its negotiation efforts, reportedly willing to make security assurances the primary focus of any future ceasefire discussions. Roman Kostenko, Chairman of Ukraine’s Defense and Intelligence Committee, underscored the importance of such assurances, stating, “For Ukraine, nothing is more important than guarantees.” Another official added that while territorial lines are crucial, securing long-term protection is now the top priority

This pivot reflects growing Ukrainian support for practical solutions. A recent Kyiv International Institute of Sociology survey showed an increase in the percentage of Ukrainians supporting a “land-for-peace” deal. Although a minority, this shift suggests some openness toward compromise if it means stability.

In previous peace talks, security guarantees proved a major stumbling block. Despite tentative agreements in 2014 and 2015, no enforceable safety measures materialized. Current proposals may face similar challenges, particularly around the contested Kursk region. Ukraine views its recent incursion into Kursk as a point of leverage, while Russia has set withdrawal from this area as a condition for negotiations.

As both nations weigh their options, it remains to be seen whether Ukraine’s renewed focus on security will bring tangible progress toward a peace resolution.
